Northwest River Natural Area Preserve (Chesapeake)
Kayak or paddleboard the Northwest River Natural Area Preserve in Chesapeake; a unique cypress forest located in the heart of Coastal Virginia. Join us as we navigate through an array of secluded mesic islands located near the boundary of the Great Dismal Swamp. With endless miles of water and tall towering cypress providing shelter from the wind, this is the perfect location for beginners and experienced paddlers of all ages. Abundant wildlife is another attribute of this tour location. Osprey, Great Blue Herons, wild turkeys, owls and green herons are often seen here, along with whitetail deer, river otters, turtles and snakes. This is the perfect paddle to immerse yourself in completely natural surroundings.
“Kayaking Adventure Was Awesome”
From the beginning of planning this trip, Kevin was incredibly flexible. We probably rescheduled on him three times but it all worked out for the best. The tour on Northwest River was really fun- we learned about the wildlife, which we got to see some cool birds, and learned the history of the area. We also learned a lot about kayaking techniques and the creek lent itself to practicing maneuvering. Mary, the other guide, took tons of pictures which they uploaded for us afterwards!
I would highly recommend Adventure Kayak Tours. They were genuine people who cared about the quality of the experience, and were enjoyable to learn from. They are also the only group I found doing tours off season. We went out in the 50s and high winds, but Northwest River was still a fantastic tour and we had a great time! –Carolyn, April 2014
