Back Bay (Virginia Beach/Sandbridge)
Back Bay Wildlife Refuge is a flatwater favorite located near the Sandbridge area of Virginia Beach. This tour’s popularity is based on the diverse eco environments viewed along the tour. The adventure begins by launching into a freshwater creek, navigating the secluded waterway of Ashville Bridge Creek south towards Muddy Creek. Arriving at Muddy Creek, enter an area locals have named “cypress alley”, one of the most scenic areas in North Bay. Keep your eyes open in this cypress woodland for whitetail deer, owls, great blue herons, white egrets, turtles and snakes. This is a perfect experience for beginners as well as the seasoned kayaker and anyone looking to see a unique side of Virginia Beach.
“Great Back Bay Paddle”
We all enjoyed this paddle – we had 2 teenagers with us that enjoyed some “free time” to splash and try out stand up paddling. Water was not deep so the kids were fine when they fell in. Lots of laughs! Our guides, Kevin and Mary were knowledgeable of the area, its wildlife and flora, but gave us the time to experience on our own and ask questions. They also took great pictures for us. Looking forward to the swamp paddle next time we are in the area. –Elaine, Auburn, New Hampshire, July 2014
